I got my final box for my Hungry Root experiment! You can read through my review of the meals below as usual, but I also wanted to share my thoughts on the overall experience.
Long story short: it was nice, but I wouldn’t make Hungry Root my regular grocery shopping option. Like with most meal services, I started to get bored with the meal choices—even though Hungry Root offers more customization because of its grocery store format. I guess I just like having creative freedom in the kitchen too much for these services to really work for me.
Another factor: the price. On average, each box cost around $105 per week. That would be fine if it covered all my meals, but it didn’t. Normally, I spend about $139/week on groceries, but in April I averaged $200/week due to this experiment. The upside? I learned I don’t spend as much as I thought, and being strategic—shopping sales and going to the right stores—works better than I expected. Go me!
Overall, this was a fun experiment, and I did discover some great snacks and meal staples I’ll likely keep in rotation during my regular grocery runs.
Breakfast
Silver Hills Bakery Organic Plain Bagels & Nancy's Organic Cultured Garlic + Herb Cream Cheese – These bagels tasted just like the honey wheat ones from Einstein Bros. I’d definitely buy them again if I can find them.
Abe's Big Coffee Cake Muffin – Tasted just like the mini versions. No complaints!
Abe's Big Chocolate Chip Muffin – Would’ve been good, but I didn’t realize it was gluten-free. The texture was a bit off for my taste.

Lunch & Dinners
Kevin’s Natural Foods Honey Garlic Beef + Somos Cilantro Lime White Rice – A great combo! Quick to cook and perfect as leftovers for lunch the next day.
Bacon + Avocado Kale Salad – This was good on its own, but of course, I had to doctor it up. I added roasted sweet potatoes, goat cheese crumbles, and extra dried cranberries. I considered adding grilled chicken, but laziness won.
5-Minute Creamy Bruschetta Chicken Pasta – This meal used Mighty Spark Tomato, Basil & Garlic Ground Chicken Patties and Presty Microwavable Mini Penne Pasta. It was the perfect meal to prep on Sunday and reheat throughout the week.
